La Casa del Tio Guero - OAXACA DE JUÁREZ

We have dined from a local on a recommendation and were not disappointed. My tacos were more like frogs, covered with guacamole and cheese. The Tlayuda of my companion was so big that she could only finish half of it, even though she had ridden how good it was. The place itself is a bit of a hole in the wall, but that adds its charm. Friendly service, beer and wine. Bonus: There is even a small gift shop hidden in the back where we made a purchase.

My mole was nothing special. My wife was worse; it was a green mole that turned out to be a green soup with a fat chicken leg in it and one side of white rice. The most inconspicuous and no spoon was offered.

We stumbled over this place for breakfast and were impressed by the food and service. We tried Enchiladas with two different moles both excellent. Definitely recommend this place if you are looking for traditional recipes in a beautiful environment.

Each item on the menu was delicious. We ordered a Tlayuda with beans and Oaxaca cheese-fantastic salsa. Chile de agua with picadillo-very good. Meat tasted good. With Tortillas and Salsa!

We had a couple mole dishes here which were good but nothing special. We ordered beers and they brought them warm to the table and were getting ready to pour them over ice when we realized what was happening before they opened the bottles. We...changed our orders as neither of us drinks warm beer. Nothing memorable over all.

We stopped here for brunch and the restaurant was nearly empty. We had hot cakes with honey and enmoladas con pollo both delicious. The service was excellent. Very friendly and efficient. It has a very pleasant ambiance. I wish we'd found this place earlier...in our trip because I definitely would have liked to try the menu del dia and some other things from the regular menu. A solid, well priced choice for local food in Oaxaca. Look for it!

Four of us had the menu del dia and all were delighted. My main dish was stuffed chicken; one got beef and veggies; and two got chili rellenos (stuffed chili) all excellent. My chicken soup was perfect; the others had a creamy broccoli soup again,...all were very happy. And then there was a yummy small dessert. All this and lemon water for just 98 pesos apiece in a pleasant atmosphere with good service! Go!

This is one of my favorite places to eat especially for the vegetarian tlayuda. However, it's quite a deal to select their daily menu which includes a soup a main entree, a dessert, and a drink for just over $5. Today I went with the...tlayuda, poleo tea, and flan for dessert. The tlayuda is so massive I can only eat half of it and take the rest home. The texture of the flan was perfect. I recommend trying the poleo tea because it's great for digestion and has a nice light taste. No sugar is required. the restaurant is still slightly up the street from Santo Domingo, one street over, off the beaten path. So it's easier to get a table at time there than in the center of town.
