I ate at Cafe Los Portales while I was in Tlaxcala for a six day visit during carnival. The first time I had fish that was okay. The second time I had cheese enchiladas in mole which seemed to upset my stomach afterwards. The prices are fair but I think there are better dining experiences in Tlaxcala. I probably wouldn't eat there again nor would I recommend it to my friends.

We were in Tlaxcala this past weekend and tried the breakfast buffet at the Cafe Los Portales since it ranked high on the list on tripadvisor. However, I have to disagree with the reviews in the past. We found the only plus of this restaurant was the location. It is extremely convenient since it is located right in the middle of the Zocalo. The food was so-so and the service was poor. The tortilla grill girl was impatient when there are more than three customers there placing order at a time. I have seen many juggled between 5 to 7 customers with complex orders and got the orders correct. This one may be inexperienced, but the attitude was not favorable. The waitress scolded at us for not being able to finish the way too spicy soup. We didn't leave the whole bowl un touched, only the very little which it had gotten too spicy and it started to hurt our throat... At the end, the server took out her own propino without consulting us. Please avoid this place if you can.

It's not the ritz folks and it doesn't prietend to be. It is a nice place to have a bite to eat, watch the world go buy and kill some much needed relaxing time. There is plenty to do and see in Tlaxcala. Descansa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The location was very nice and it was fun sitting outdoors and people watching while eating lunch. The food itself was good, not great, but the service was very good. Would go back if in Tlaxcala.

This is a one-of-a-kind place. It has rather interesting decor yet good ambience. The food is very good. I recommend the mixiote, a dish of ram meat cooked with achiote (annato seed paste) in the leaf of maguey cactus. It is perfectly made and the meat is tender and flavorful. One of the secrets of this place is another dining room at the back. It is called "El Transpatio". It is usually quieter and less busy but they sometimes do parties and events back there. Waiters don't sit you in that dining hall so just walk in and sit down they all attend you fairly quickly. I definitely recommend this place as the place to eat in Tlaxcala. Enjoy.
